 Welcome to the Bend in the River Council Page.The early 1970s found Kesey, Faye, and many of the original Pranksters back up in Oregon where they built nests, raised kids and immersed themselves in the local community.Around 1973/4 they became involved in something called the Bend in the River Council which was an attempt to influence Oregon's political and environmental decisions. Kesey and Babbs travelled to a number of towns around Oregon where they held open public "town-hall" meetings to discuss local area concerns and recruit interested parties. A large "Council" meeting was held on July 4th at Bend, Oregon where these "citizens of the state [were] given the opportunity to peruse, review, consider and express opinions on possible directions for the next 25 years" (I'm quoting from the BITR proposal that was circulating at the time).
A piece about the Bend in the River Council appeared in the July 18th, 1974 Rolling Stone issue, but so far I've not seen much else in print about it. It's an interesting counterpoint to the usual 'non-political' image of Kesey, the Pranksters and the 'counterculture' generally, and if you were there, or can tell us, your avid readers, more about it then download your knowledge
